Clean Monday on Rhodes

Clean (Ash) Monday is a public holiday in Greece. CNN iReport dedicates a page of how this holiday is celebrated in Rhodes. The reporter was impressed by a sky full of kites amidst ancient Greek ruins.

“The families were celebrating Clean Monday, the first day of Lent for eastern Christians when kites are flown by children and adults in honor of the festival. As I watched the fathers and mothers guiding and helping their kids with their kites, I felt homesick. Memories of my childhood days came rushing back to me,” she said. “The Greeks are also family oriented, just like us Filipinos. It was a festive and joyful atmosphere.”
