Rhodes is home to a plethora of cultural venues for those who want to do something more than just sunbathe on one of the its astonishing beaches. A €1.2 million Museum of Modern Art has recently opened on the island, while the Municipal Art Gallery and the Modern Art Centre are also open for visitors. In addition the island offers a unique range of archeological sites and monuments that go back 2000 years bC, from the Arcopolis of Lindos to the Medieval Castles of the Knights. Meanwhile, in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes rich exhibitions of Roman artefacts, mosaics, figurines and jewellery found in tombs are just some of the items on display at the museum, which is housed in the mediaeval Hospital of the Knights that was founded in 1440.
