Since the antiquity the area of Kalithea (Καλλιθέα) was known for its thermal, therapeutic springs. In 1927, under the administration of Mario Lago, a systematic study of the waters was begun by Gustavo Gasperini, his son Carlo and Enea Brunetti (who later became the of the director of Terme di Calitea). The study concluded that the water had a range of important properties and proposed the development of the area with the creation of a Thermal Spa Institution that would function in accordance to the stringiest health requirements of the time.

In late December 1928 the Government of the Islands of the Aegean decided the construction of the building complex. The project was commissioned to the famous architect Pietro Lombardi. His plans for Kallithea Thermal Spa were considered among the best architectural compositions of the time.

At a short distance from the town center (7 km), Kalithea (Καλλιθέα) is famous for its ancient springs and the unique Kalithea Springs complex, one of the best attractions on the island. It is an ideal place for diving and snorkeling as there is abundance of marine life, with a amazing variety of fish and crystal clear emerald waters.

There are several, small, organized beaches here, scattered around the spectacular rocks of Kalithea bay. The main beach (sand and pebble), usually gets very crowded as it is one of the main sightseens for the daily cruise boats arriving from Mandraki. It uses the facilities of the renovated Kalithea complex so it is a fine place to have a coffee or a drink or to dine in a fantastic environment.
