Blue flag awarded beaches for 2009
Rhodes is the island with the cleanest beaches in the European Union as 33 Rhodian beaches have been awarded the international Blue Flag status for excelling in safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards. The Blue Flag Award is a voluntary eco-label program ran by a non-governmental institution, the Denmark’s Foundation for Environmental Education, that compiles a selection of organized beaches around the world (currently 37 countries and more than 3.300 beaches), based on certain criteria like the water quality, infrastructures, services and environmental activities.
Like in 2008 during this season Greece ranked again 2nd, behind Spain (493) with 424 awarded beaches. The cherished flags, will this year fly at the following beaches of Rhodes:
